Understated and versatile, this 5gsm Plain Lokta Paper is the perfect base for creative projects or refined packaging.

Handmade in Nepal from Daphne bark, it has a smooth yet fibrous surface that feels distinctly natural. The lighter weight gives a soft, flexible feel without sacrificing strength, and its generous 51x76cm size is ideal for printing, stamping, folding, or wrapping.

Neutral in colour and full of character, this plain version allows the material itself to shine – making it a great companion to more decorative Lokta styles, or a minimalist option on its own.

Please note: Each sheet of paper is handmade, so slight variations in colour, design, weight, and thickness are to be expected. These natural differences are part of the charm and uniqueness of the product.

What is Lokta Paper?

Lokta is a natural, eco-friendly paper made from the bark of the Daphne plant, which grows in the high-altitude forests of the Himalayan region, particularly in Nepal. The plant is notable for its ability to regenerate after harvesting, making it a sustainable resource that doesn’t require deforestation.

To make Lokta paper, the bark is stripped from the plant without damaging its roots. It's then soaked, pulped by hand, and spread into sheets using traditional wooden frames. These sheets are sun-dried and sometimes further embellished with petals, leaves, cotton fibres, or natural dyes. The process is labour-intensive but environmentally low-impact, often carried out in small village workshops as part of fairly traded, community-led production.

Lokta paper is valued for its strength, durability, and rich texture. Unlike mass-produced papers, it has a naturally fibrous, slightly irregular surface that gives it a distinctive handmade character. It’s resistant to tearing and humidity, making it popular for wrapping, bookbinding, and crafting.
