What is Lokta Paper?
Lokta is a natural, eco-friendly paper made from the bark of the Daphne plant, which grows in the high-altitude forests of the Himalayan region, particularly in Nepal. The plant is notable for its ability to regenerate after harvesting, making it a sustainable resource that doesn’t require deforestation.
To make Lokta paper, the bark is stripped from the plant without damaging its roots. It's then soaked, pulped by hand, and spread into sheets using traditional wooden frames. These sheets are sun-dried and sometimes further embellished with petals, leaves, cotton fibres, or natural dyes. The process is labour-intensive but environmentally low-impact, often carried out in small village workshops as part of fairly traded, community-led production.
Lokta paper is valued for its strength, durability, and rich texture. Unlike mass-produced papers, it has a naturally fibrous, slightly irregular surface that gives it a distinctive handmade character.
