Bangalore is known as India’s Garden City, although these days the gardens have to compete with software parks and some fairly heroic traffic. But long before the city started exporting computer code, it was exporting fragrance.
Incense is serious business here. Bangalore and nearby Mysore have been at the heart of the Indian agarbathi trade for more than a century. The old Maharajas of Mysore encouraged the craft, and Karnataka had all the right things to hand: sandalwood, aromatic plants, herbs, barks, natural gums.. and people who knew how to blend them.
A fragrant paste rolled around a bamboo stick sounds simple. It isn’t. Get the mixture wrong and you have a smoky stick. Get it right and you have proper Bangalore incense. The incense purists still look for Bangalore-made.. and probably with good reason.
Banjara is one of the more adventurous makers in this old incense city. Rather than making the same old boxes, they have played around with ritual resins, smudging fragrances, unusual formats and some seriously good-looking packaging. These jute-tied Ritual Resin boxes have become the flagship Banjara range.
A little AW history..
Ancient Wisdom and Banjara have been working together for around ten years. Not simply buyer and supplier. Ideas are talked over, products adapted, fragrances tested, packaging changed and whole new ranges developed for gift shops across the UK and Europe. Sometimes the idea starts in Bangalore, sometimes at AW.. and usually gets fiddled with somewhere between the two.
That is how a good range grows. Not dreamed up overnight by a marketing department, but improved shipment by shipment by people who know incense and people who know gift shops.
So inside these rather splendid little boxes is some proper Bangalore incense tradition, the rich character of ritual resin and around ten years of good international meddling. Light one and you will understand.
