Medium Gong in Stand - 50cm - Greenwash
This 50cm gong has a distinctive greenwash finish and an ornately carved wooden stand, giving it a strong presence in a home, meditation space or yoga studio. When struck, it produces a deep, resonant tone that carries well and lingers in the air.
Anyone who has travelled around Bali will have seen – and almost certainly heard – gongs in temple grounds, village ceremonies, processions and traditional gamelan performances. In Balinese music, the gong has an important role, marking key moments with a deep note that carries across the other instruments.
The metal gong is cast in Bandung, Java, then tuned and decorated in Bali. The albasia-wood stand is carved and finished in Bali.
The Carved Frame and Its Guardian Dragons
The albasia frame is more than simply a stand for the gong. It is carved and finished as part of the complete design, turning the instrument into a freestanding piece of Indonesian art.
Above the gong sit two mirrored Balinese naga, or winged dragons. In Balinese temple carving, this high-positioned winged naga is associated with Naga Taksaka, a guardian figure linked with the upper realm, air and atmosphere.
Musical, decorative and full of character, this larger gong makes an impressive sounding instrument as well as a striking feature piece.
