Born in Java – Given Its Voice in Bali

These gongs have a rather more interesting life than most things found on a shop floor. The metal gong is cast in Bandung, West Java – a busy, noisy city with a huge tradition of making. Which seems an entirely suitable place for a gong to begin.

From Java, the unfinished gong travels east to Bali. Here it is tuned, decorated and matched with a locally carved albasia-wood frame. The frame is also finished in Bali, bringing the metalwork, carving and decoration together as one complete piece.

By the time it is ready to leave the island, the gong has passed through the hands of craftspeople from two very different parts of Indonesia: Java makes the body; Bali gives it its voice and character.

A Sound Woven into Balinese Life

Anyone who has travelled around Bali will have seen – and almost certainly heard – gongs in temple grounds, village ceremonies, processions and traditional gamelan performances.

In Balinese music, a gong does more than make a noise. Its deep note marks a moment, carries across the other instruments and seems to remain hanging in the air long after the mallet has struck. Indonesian gamelan, in which gongs play an important part, was recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021.

These wholesale Balinese gongs are contemporary artisan pieces – not old instruments removed from temples – but they come from that same living culture of gong making, carving and ceremonial sound.

The Carved Frame and Its Guardian Dragons

The albasia frame is not simply something from which to hang the gong. It is carved and finished as part of the complete design, turning the instrument into a freestanding piece of Indonesian art.

Above the larger stands are two mirrored Balinese naga, or winged dragons. In Balinese temple carving, this high-positioned winged naga is associated with Naga Taksaka – guardian of the upper realm and a symbol of air and atmosphere. Placed above the gong, the dragons form a protective crown and give the stand something of the character of a miniature temple gateway.

Natural variations in the carving, wood grain, decorative finish and tone should be expected. No two artisan gongs will be precisely identical – and that is rather the point.

Larger Gongs and Assembly

The larger gongs are supplied flat-packed for safer and more secure transport, protecting both the carved frame and the metal gong while in transit.

Assembly is relatively straightforward. Build the frame on a level surface, check that all the fittings are secure and hang the gong last. Two people will make assembling the largest pieces easier, simply because of their size.

Keep the original packaging where possible, particularly if the gong will later be collected or delivered to a customer.

How to Display and Sell a Gong

Give it proper space. Do not squeeze a gong between shelves. Use the largest size your shop can comfortably accommodate as a focal point, leaving enough room for the gong to hang and move freely.

Let customers hear it. One gentle strike followed by a few seconds of silence will sell the gong far better than a paragraph of description. The lingering resonance does the work. Repeated banging is unnecessary – and may eventually drive the staff slightly mad.

Use a simple invitation. A small sign saying “Please ask to hear the gong” is much more tempting than “Do not touch.” It also gives staff a natural opening to explain the product.

Tell the two-island story. A display card reading “Cast in Bandung – tuned, decorated and carved in Bali” immediately gives the piece provenance and makes it far more than another imported ornament.

Create a destination display. Place the gong with singing bowls, meditation cushions, incense and crystals. Even when the customer chooses something smaller, the gong gives the entire collection authority and theatre.

Sell beyond the gift shop. These gongs have strong appeal for yoga studios, sound practitioners, spas, retreat centres, therapy rooms, hotels and statement interiors. Sometimes the best customer will be another local business looking for one unforgettable feature.
